Highlights of 2010 FIFA World Cup

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) will be conducting competition among the senior men's national teams once for every four years. The FIFA world cup is also called as the soccer World Cup or often simply termed as World Cup.

Initially, this tournament started in 1930. From then for every consecutive four years this world cup is being held. But during 1942 and 1946 because of the world war they were not conducted.


32 teams will be competing at the various host nations as per the current format and the duration for this world cup will be around one month. As of now 2010, 19 tournaments were conducted and 8 different countries won the trophies. Of them,Brazil is the leading nation which has title for five times and next nation which won four titles is Italy and the third leading nation will be Germany with three titles and next Argentina and Uruguay will have two titles each. Next England, France and Spain with one title each.


FIFA world cup is considered as the famous one because most of the people watch this tournament.


Coming to FIFA 2010, the hosting nation for the year 2010 is South Africa, Spain has won the title and the next runner up is Netherlands and it was conducted during the period of 11th June to 11th July, 2010. The number of matches played during 2010 world cup are 64. Those matches were played at ten stadiums which are across South Africa. The final of 2010 FIFA world cup was played at Soccer city stadium in Johannesburg of South Africa.


Selection process for this tournament started in August 2007 and 32 teams participated for the World Qualification Tournament.


For the first time with Andres Iniesta's goal in the 116th minute, Spain defeated Netherlands 1-0 after extra time. Players of Spain like Iker Casillas won the golden glove for the two goals. Bronze ball and Silver boot were given to the player who had a total of 5 goals and 1 assist. Castrol Index was topped by Sergio Ramos.
