Difference Between Manual Transmission and Automatic Transmission

Generally to change the vehicle's gear ratio, these automatic and manual transmissions are used. Both the systems work in similar ways. There is primary difference between manual and automatic transmissions is the driver interaction with them. There is semi-automatic transmission also, it is combination of both manual and automatic transmission elements. There are few differences, such as:
  • A driver has to drive a manual transmission with both the feet. Before changing the gears, the driver has to engage the clutch pedal. Then slowly clutch must be disengaged while the car moves forward. Driver has to repeat this process while car starts to move faster.
  • Correct gear can be selected for the driver in case on automatic transmission. Complex communication system can be used in this transmission. Information is incorporated by this system about speed of the car, whether the driver is accelerating and braking and about revolutions per minute of the engine.
  • Procedure of the manual transmission can be challenging and it can be steep and frustrating. Drivers of manual transmission can be tried by constantly changing the gear. Generally, more urban commuters prefer automatic transmission.
  • But some people like this manual transmission, because control is given by this transmission to driver.
  • More fuel can be consumed by automatic transmission vehicles than manual transmission i.e., more power is required by automatic transmission to operate.
  • Frequent and complex servicing is required by automatic transmissions than manual transmission. Automatic transmission requires regular oil and fluid changes and engine inspections.
  • If a car battery dies then automatic transmission vehicle will be stuck. If it is in the case of manual, if the car is pushed then it will start.
These are differences between manual transmission and automatic transmission, according to your need and drivers who needs physical needs then they can choose the automatic transmission vehicle.
