Substance Abused Individuals Linked with Poor Oral Health

It is not only necessary to maintain the physical health of the body. Even oral health is important. Several studies have revealed that poor oral health is responsible for many other serious health issues like cancer. Poor oral health issues may include tooth decay, gum infections, mouth cancer and so on. There may be many reasons for poor oral health.

On the other hand, substance abuse is the major issue in the United States. It is known that usage of illicit drugs like marijuana, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines and so on result in affecting physical and mental health. But, a study conducted by the researchers of the Boston University found that people who are dependent on substance abuse are linked with poor oral health.

The study reported the oral health status of the subjects who were alcohol, stimulant, marijuana and opioid users. It analyzed the oral health effects of different illicit drugs. However, there was no significant association between the type of drug used and the status of oral health. The results of the study showed that fair or poor oral health was observed in 60% of the subjects. It was found that opioid users showed a decline in oral health over the period of one year.

It is, therefore, necessary to consider the oral health problem among substance abusers. They have to be made aware and educated on the effects of illegal drugs on oral health. It was even suggested that engaging the illicit drug addicts in medical care discussions may be facilitated by addressing oral health concerns.
