What are the Components of a Roofing System?

Components used in roofing add functionality, quality, security and an attractive appearance or look to the roof. Following are some of the components of roof:
  • Cornices are the points of the roof where the side walls of the house are projected to the roof.
  • Courses are nothing but installation of rows of shingles or tiles horizontally.
  • With the usage of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB), shingles or panels or tiles are attached to the surface of the roof. This is decking and sheathing component of a roof.
  • A dormer is the component of the roof which is surrounded by the windows as well as the sloped roofs but it is not a part of the main portion of the house.
  • Eaves: the lower end of the edges of the roof.
  • Flashing: It refers to metal sheets that can be used on any places of a roof to prevent leakage by diverting water. These sheets can be made of galvanized flashing, a galvanized alloy, copper, lead coated copper or stainless steel.
  • Underlayment - A paper which is used to cover the roof or seal the roof from damage caused by the snow, rain, ice, etc. This sheet is laid on the plywood sheeting. Here the use of a membrane is typically required, a waterproof membrane, a sweat sheet or vapor barrier for extra protection.
  • Shingles or tiles: This is the top most part of the roof. Some materials of tiles or shingles cover the underlayment part of the roof. This gives a finishing touch to the outermost top part of a roof. The usage of tiles is to cover the roof and it became a common roof cover from thousands of years.
There are other components are also there such as trim, frieze board, gable, hip, joist, louvers, rake, and ridge, slope or pitch, Soffit, truss, valley etc.
